Monique Leroux, Vice Chairman of the Board Fiera Holdings Inc. and Chair, Industry Strategy Council of Canada
A Companion of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame (CBHF) and the Securities Industry Hall of Fame (IIAC), Monique Leroux is a corporate director. She was Chair of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Desjardins Group from 2008 to 2016 and Chair of the Board of Investissement Québec from 2016 to 2020.
In May 2020, Ms. Leroux was appointed to lead the Industrial Strategy Board by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Canada. She is also a member of the G7 Impact Taskforce (UK) representing Canada.
A Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors of Canada (ICD), Ms. Leroux serves as an independent member of the Board of Directors of Michelin and Chair of its CSR Committee, the Board of BCE/BELL and Chair of its Governance Committee, the Board of COUCHE-TARD and the Board of Lallemand (a private company). Ms. Leroux was a member of the Board of S&P GLOBAL from 2016 to 2022. She serves as a senior advisor (non-executive) to Fiera Capital and was appointed Canadian Vice Chair of the Trilateral Commission. Ms. Leroux also chaired the Quebec government’s Advisory Council on the Economy and Innovation and was a member of the Canada-U.S. Council for the Advancement of Women Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders.
Under her leadership, Desjardins Group has experienced remarkable growth in its Canadian operations while ranking among the top five strongest financial institutions in the world according to Bloomberg. Prior to assuming this important role, Ms. Leroux was Chief Financial Officer of Desjardins Group, Senior Vice President at RBC (Royal Bank), Chief Operating Officer of QUEBECOR INC and a partner at ERNST & YOUNG (EY) in Canada. From 2013 to 2017, Ms. Leroux also served as a board member and then President of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), a global organization representing more than 2.5 million businesses generating more than $3 trillion in sales in over 100 countries.
Ms. Leroux served as co-chair of the B7 Summit (Canada 2018), co-chair of the B7 Small and Medium Enterprise Working Group (Germany 2017), and served as chair of the High Level Contact Group of the European Grouping of Cooperative Banks (EGBC). She also represented the Canadian business group at the B7 Summit in Berlin and participated in the G7 Forum for Dialogue with Women as well as the G20 Leaders Summit in Germany.
Her honors include being a member of the Order of Canada, an Officer of the National Order of Quebec, a Knight of the Legion of Honor (France), a recipient of the Woodrow-Wilson Award (U.S.), and the CPA Tribute Award, as well as a Fellow of the Order of CPAs. She received the Cooperative Excellence Award from Cooperatives and Mutuals Canada for her contribution to the development of the cooperative movement. She also holds honorary degrees and medals from ten Canadian universities and is an honorary citizen of the City of Lévis in recognition of her outstanding economic and social contribution.
She devotes her time to a number of non-profit organizations and is particularly interested in the arts, education and youth. She is Chair of the Board of the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec, Vice-Chair of the Board of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and a member of the Board of the Université de Sherbrooke. She was a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Rideau Hall Foundation and is now a Director Emeritus. She served as President of the Canada Games (Sherbrooke 2013). President of Fondation Desjardins and of the Centraide of Greater Montreal campaign, she also chaired the Board of Governors for the 375th anniversary of Montreal and has published 3 books (1) Ma vie en mouvement, (2) Alphonse Desjardins: Le pouvoir d’agir, (3) Carnet de rencontres.
